Between 2020 and 2025, Ewan held key leadership roles at EMBL. He has been Director of EMBL-EBI since 2015 and was Associate Director from 2012 to 2015. Before that, he was the Head of Nucleotide Data at EMBL-EBI (2000-2015).

Ewan led the analysis of the Human Genome gene set, mouse and chicken genomes and the ENCODE project, focusing on non-coding elements of the human genome. His main areas of research include functional genomics, DNA algorithms, statistical methods to analyse genomic information, and use of images for chromatin structure.

A non-executive Director of Genomics England and the UK’s Health Data Research Service, Ewan is also a consultant and advisor to a number of companies, including Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Cantata Bio.

He was elected an EMBO member in 2012, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2014, and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2015. Ewan was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2019. He was also elected as a member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 2024.

In 2019, Ewan became a Board Member of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Ewan serves on a number of Scientific Advisory Boards, including for the Wellcome Genome Campus, DKFZ, the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), Institute Pasteur, Riken Institute, Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), the Norwegian Centre for Molecular Biosciences and Medicine (NCMBM), and the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) in Vienna.

He has received a number of awards, including the 2003 Francis Crick Award from the Royal Society, the 2005 Overton Prize from the International Society for Computational Biology, and the 2005 Benjamin Franklin Award for contributions in Open Source Bioinformatics.

Ewan completed his PhD at the Wellcome Sanger Institute with Richard Durbin. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Tartu in Estonia and Birkbeck College at the University of London, UK.

Frédéric Sgard acts as independent expert for various European research infrastructure projects. Prior joining the OECD, he worked as senior scientist in a pharmaceutical company until the end of 2002, on the discovery of new pharmacological targets. Trained as a molecular biologist, he studied Molecular Genetics at the University of Paris-Saclay (France), and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Reading, UK, in 1994.

He has chaired the ESFRI Physical Sciences and Engineering Strategy Work group in 2013-2016 and served as ESFRI Chair in 2016-2018.

GR has chaired in 2019 the High-Level Expert Group on Long Term Sustainability of Research Infrastructure. He has coordinated the expert group who wrote the Italian National Plan for Open Science that become effective in 2022.

He represents Italy in the EOSC Steering Board and contributes as co-chair to the Policy sub-group. GR is the Italian Senior Official of the GSO on global research infrastructures, Chair of GSO in 2026. He is author or co-author of over 270 research papers in ISI journals, H=43.

Since joining Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities in 2009, she has coordinated Spain's participation in major international research infrastructures, representing the country in the governing bodies of CERN, ESO, EMBL, F4E, SKAO (currently Vice-Chair), IFMIF-DONES, ET, LifeWatch, EBRAINS, among others. With extensive experience in science policy, evaluation, and management, Jan has been a long-standing member of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), serving as Chair from 2019 to 2021, and he still actively contributing to ESFRI as an executive board member.

Presently, he also is the Czech delegate to the European Research and Innovation Area Committee (ERAC) - a position he has held since 2010 - as well as a member of the Global Science Forum of the OECD. He is actively involved in implementing Open Science policies at both the EU and national levels. He has served on the EOSC executive board and currently represents the Czech Republic on the EOSC Steering Board. Additionally, he is a member of the Czech National EOSC Coordination Council and provides guidance on EOSC-related national developments.

She was awarded a “2010 Young Scientist” from the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the Patronage of His Majesty the King, “2011 Women in Science” fellowship from UNESCO-L’Oreal Thailand.

She was selected as one of “66 Young Leaders Shaping Thailand’s Future of 2012” by the Bangkok Post which celebrated its 66 years in operation. In addition, she won UK alumni Award for Professional Achievement from the British council and UK Embassy in 2018 and has been listed as top 2% of the most cited scientist in the field of Pharmacy & Pharmacology since 2020. She has been appointed as Honorary Professor by University of Queensland, Australia, since 2017.
