SoBigData RI: A Distributed Digital Research Infrastructure for Responsible and Interdisciplinary Open Science
SoBigData RI is a distributed European Research Infrastructure enabling data-intensive and AI driven research through a shared ecosystem of computational resources, data, methods, tools, and expertise. While primarily serving the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), its flexible architecture supports collaboration with other scientific communities.
The infrastructure is organised around two interconnected layers. The first is a technological Open Science layer, providing distributed digital services, interoperable resources, collaborative environments, and computational facilities for discovering, executing, reproducing, and sharing research workflows.
The second is a Responsible AI and Ethical Open Science layer, embedding principles such as privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, and reproducibility into the research process.
This combination allows SoBigData to support interdisciplinary research beyond individual domains. Its modular and adaptable design enables collaboration with communities working in areas such as pervasive intelligence, quantum technologies, physics, and materials science.
These intersections are enabled through European project partnerships based on cooperation, shared expertise, interoperable resources, and responsible AI methods. SoBigData therefore represents a flexible model for distributed digital Research Infrastructures, combining shared technological capabilities, Open Science, and responsible AI to foster collaboration across scientific communities and support interdisciplinary and cross-domain research.
